First Cut

Knife skills are essential in cooking and typically form the foundation of culinary programs. However, many parents feel anxious when it comes to children using knives. Concerns about potential injuries can lead to reluctance in letting kids handle sharp tools. Our aim is to provide reassurance through age-appropriate knives that encourage proper technique, empowering children to become more confident in their knife skills.

What can we do better?

Too Sharp or Too Dull

Some knives marketed for children as young as 3 years old have edges sharper than many kitchen knives, while others are so dull that they crush rather than cut. Dull knives require more force to use, which can actually make them less safe.

We believe there is a sweet spot: a knife that can easily cut through most foods while still being safe enough to prevent injury.

Improper Technique

The pinch grip is widely regarded as the most effective way to hold kitchen knives, providing both control and stability. However, some kid-friendly knife designs can make this grip challenging.

We believe it's essential to teach children proper techniques from the start, helping to build their confidence—and yours—so they can safely handle sharper knives as they progress.

Toy-like

Many current children's knives are overly "kiddified," which can hinder kids from understanding the true purpose of a knife and developing a sense of responsibility.

We believe that while it's important for knives to appeal to kids, they should also resemble real knives. This helps children recognize the care needed when using these knives.
